Accommodation;

Definition
The type of accommodation used or available for use by an individual household. Examples include:
  • the whole of a terraced house
  • a flat in a purpose-built block of flats
  • a temporary or mobile structure
Classification
  • Detached
  • Semi-detached
  • Terraced (including end-terrace)
  • In a tenement or purpose-built block of flats (including ‘4-in-a-block’)
  • Part of a converted or shared house (including bed-sits)
  • In a commercial building (for example, in an office building, hotel or over a shop)
  • A caravan or other mobile or temporary structure
Reason for asking;

This question provides information on the amount and type of housing in each area.  It identifies changes in the state of the housing stock, and provides a firm basis for assessing current and future demand.

This information also helps with calculating whether appropriate forms of housing are available in local areas.

Tenure; 

Definition
This variable provides information on the tenure of a dwelling. On the final output database it applies to all dwellings. For an unshared dwelling it repeats the information given in tenure of household (TENHUK). For shared dwellings, where tenure differs for the households in the dwelling the priority order is owned, social rented, private rented, lives rent free.

Not applicable category (X) comprises: All dwellings with no residents.
  • Owned: Owned outright
  • Owned: Owned with a mortgage or loan
  • Owned: Shared ownership
  • Social rented: Rented from Council (Local Authority)/Scottish Homes/NIHE
  • Social rented: Other social rented
  • Private rented: Private landlord or letting agency
  • Private rented: Employer of a household member
  • Private rented: Relative or friend of household member
  • Private rented: Other
  • Living rent free
  • Not applicable
